Reading
At Wheelwright Lane Primary School the children read with focus for new learning, pleasure and practice.
Exciting texts lead learning throughout each topic to develop a deep love and enjoyment of fiction and non-fiction in our children.
Reading across the school is supported and enabled through the use of the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Programme
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Programme
Children are taught new reading skills and strategies for decoding and understanding a wide range of text types. The programme offers focused daily sessions which enable teachers to assess progress in their phonic ability and plan for daily keep up sessions if needed.
Reading Practice in EYFS and KS1
In Reception and Year 1 reading practice takes place three times per week with Day 1 focussing on decoding, Day 2 focussing on prosody and Day 3 focussing on comprehension skills. Each day the children come home with their reading practice book. This is an opportunity for parents to support with this reading approach. It is imperative that this book comes into school everyday as your child will use this book during their reading session with an adult.
Children in Year 2 will begin a spelling programme where more complex spelling patterns are taught. Reading practice continues at least three times a week with a strong focus on comprehension skills. For children that need additionally support with developing reading fluency, they are supported through the Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up programme.
Reading Practise in KS2
In KS2, children engage in a minimum of two reading practise sessions per week. Reading practise sessions are taught outside of the English lesson. Children will work with a teacher or teaching assistant on a specific task linked to the reading domains.
Children are taught to firstly, read for fluency, then to approach the reading task using prosody and finally to answer questions related to the text. Adults support children to identify key vocabulary, retrieve information and infer meaning. Children are encouraged to search for evidence within the text and record their answers. During reading practise sessions, adults will support children to develop their fluency and comprehension skills through lots of discussion.
In addition to this, reading is taught as part of ongoing English lessons. Through carefully chosen, high quality texts, teachers enhance children’s learning through discussion, modelling, scaffolding and guided or independent practice.
Reading for Pleasure
We are fortunate to have a wide range of high-quality texts that engage our children in reading. Over time we have raised funds through Readathons, Book Sales and World Book Day events. Using the children’s own voice we have purchased books that we know our children love and are interested in reading. We believe in captivating a love of reading by knowing what our children enjoy! Our reading scheme reflects our children’s wide range of interests and genres – there really is something for everyone!
Our books are carefully selected to challenge our children. Each week, children choose a book to read at home. It is our expectation that they read at least 3 times per week. We expect our parents to sign their child’s reading diary to say they have heard their child read. This goes right the way through to Year 6!
