Social Networking

Any social networking site has potential for good and bad – its the privacy settings and behaviour of people using it that are so important. Parents and carers need to monitor all social media use and talk to their children about their safe use and particularly about sharing photos and videos.

The one cropping up in the news and apparently popular at the moment is musical.ly,  this is a music video community – based around social network for sharing user-generated music videos. You can upload your own videos, remix others’ work, or browse content created by other users and by more famous recording artists. Because it involves popular music, there can be lots of swearing and sexual content in the songs. However, some families have encountered explicit sexual material despite the available settings and controls in the app. Because users can select whether to share their videos with their friends or the general public, you should adjust  settings accordingly. Read the app’s privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared.

The Terms and Conditions don’t clearly specify any age restrictions but according to Common Sense Media 16+ would be recommended.
